Vertical Garden Tower Benefits

Grow organically at home with the ALTO Garden HX Tower.  Measuring 8 layers high with 5 pots per layer, this system is designed for higher output and capacity compared to the GX model.  Measuring just 22 inches wide at its base, this vertical garden takes about 3 square feet of space but yields as much as a 50 square foot garden for maximum space efficiency.  This tower is perfect for outdoor balconies, patios, backyards, or even in indoor spaces which receive enough sun.

The HX Vertical Garden Tower is very clean to use because it does not use soil.  Net pots are utilized to insert the base of the plant inside the tower walls, while the upper leafy part of the plant is left outside to receive light.  This method of growing without soil is referred to as hydroponics.  More specifically – our systems are called aeroponic towers, which is a subset of the hydroponics family.  The term “aero” stems from the fact that plant roots are suspended in air inside the system, for higher oxygen uptake vs. being buried in the ground.

Watering

Watering is powered by a water pump which is placed inside the water tank at the base of the system.  Water is pumped to the top of the vertical garden.  Then, gravity takes over and water trickles back down the tower watering plant roots along the way.  Water is returned to the water tank and this cycle repeats, recycling water like a fountain.  This closed-loop watering results in exceptional water efficiency which uses 95% less water than traditional soil-based gardening.

When watering soil, excess water is used because only a tiny fraction of the water is utilized by the plant.  Instead, soil surrounding the plant gets drenched where the roots would never reach.  This water is then lost in the ground, or lost to run-off or evaporation.  Watering is infinitely more precise with vertical garden towers.  Water is directed to flow right over the net pots where plant roots are, for specific targeting.  Water which isn’t immediately absorbed is circulated back through the system again.

It is best to perform watering in intervals, rather than a continues flow.  At ALTO Garden – we like to water our plants for 15 minutes at the top of the hour, for 14 to 18 hours a day when growing outside.  In warmer temperatures, a 15 minute interval at the top and bottom of each hour can be used.

Vertical Garden Tower Construction

The HX Vertical Garden Tower stands 8 layers tall with 5 pots per layer.  This provides 40 pots for you to grow lettuce, arugula, kale, rosemary, oregano, tomatoes, strawberries and your other favorite fruits and vegetables.  Even with more pots per layer, we have retained a wide-spaced pot design by increasing the tower diameter from 8 inches in the GX model, to a diameter of 10 inches in the HX model.  Be wary of systems from other brands where pots are placed together too closely.  This leads to plants crowding on top of each other and competing for light.  With the HX Vertical Garden – your plants will have room to stretch out and grow, which means bigger harvests!

The HX Tower is made with high-quality, UV-resistant food-grade material which is completely BPA free. It is designed to withstand the daily stresses of being outside without fading, warping or cracking. Each tower section is a solid, 360 degree all-around construction without seams or joints with walls that are 2mm thick. Internal support rods are utilized inside the tower to keep all tower sections firmly in place and joined to the reservoir tank.

FAQ

What are the differences between the GX Tower and HX Tower (without lights)?

The main difference between these two towers is their planting capacity. The GX Tower has 24 pots (6 layers x 4 pots) whereas the HX Tower has 40 pots (8 layers x 5 pots). Therefore, the HX Tower without lights is slightly taller (5’ 4” vs 4’ 10”) and the individual tower sections are slightly wider (10” vs 8”) than the GX model. The HX Tower also has a stronger water pump for faster circulation.

Why do plants grow faster in ALTO Garden towers?

ALTO Garden hydroponic towers utilize aeroponic principles to accelerate plant growth. Plant roots are suspended in air inside the tower, resulting in higher oxygen uptake vs. being buried underground. Nutrient delivery is also more precise and delivered directly to plant roots, so roots don’t have to expand energy searching for food. Instead, they spend that energy on growing!

How does a vertical garden tower save water?

Watering the HX Tower is powered by a water pump placed inside the reservoir water tank. Water is pumped to the top of the tower, then gravity brings it back down to irrigate plant roots. Water returns to the water tank below, where it’s pumped back up again. This cycle repeats, recycling water like a water fountain. This closed-loop design saves more than 95% of the water that would be used when watering a traditional soil garden.

What kind of plants can I grow?

You can grow a wide variety of vegetables, leafy greens and fruits in your vertical garden. This includes lettuce, cabbage, kale, spinach, peppers, tomatoes, strawberries, parsley, basil, cilantro and more. Note that root vegetables or anything that grows downward, are not compatible with hydroponic systems, such as onions and potatoes.
